GLOCK 23 Gen iii .40S&Due west Pistol Review

2020: This original review of the GLOCK 23 .40 S&W pistol is near a 3rd generation model. Information technology was originally written in 2010. This is a model I've carried all these years now. The new Generation 5 models have had a few features added. But information technology remains the aforementioned dependable, effective, and widely used model from GLOCK.

This is what my Generation iii - GLOCK 23 looks like in 2020.
Now with a Vortex Venom Red Dot sight

The GLOCK 23 .40 S&W pistol is a gun I've had my heart on for some time. I've been and then happy with the GLOCK 22, carrying it several times weekly in casual apparel, I began to wonder only how much difference the slightly smaller G23 would make as far as concealment.

Equally with all GLOCKS, at that place are numerous good holsters for the G23. I had no doubt that it would be a bit easier to encompass. And I figured it would be a bit more comfortable when sitting for long periods of fourth dimension with the gun tucked in an inside the waistband holster.

So, I decided to stop wondering and go alee and make the jump. A few weeks ago, (today is 12/2/2009) I purchased a GLOCK 23. At the aforementioned time I purchased a set of TruGlo TFO nighttime sights to supervene upon the horrible plastic sights that come on GLOCKS.

The Compact Size Advantage of the G23 .40S&W

I immediately liked the way the slightly smaller gun felt in my paw. Having an affinity for GLOCKS anyway, I know that in general I do well with them every bit far as grip angle, paw size, etc., I was not surprised that the gun fit me well.

I've used a friend'due south GLOCK 27, and while I liked it, I plant it just too small with my finger hanging off the end of the grip. Plus, I merely don't like small-scale guns much, and but use them considering they allow me to conduct when I otherwise can't.

Simply in general, in coincidental clothes, I have favored a larger if not full size handguns which the G22 has fulfilled nicely for the couple of years before I bought this gun. The G22 was my "conviction" gun, being familiar with its experience, accuracy, etc. I knew information technology would take a real convincing operation from the GLOCK 23 to convince me to (God prevent) switch my primary carry pistol.

Then a couple of days after I bought it, I mounted the TRUGLO TFO sights. Then I took off to the Erstwhile Fort Gun guild with some circle and silhouette targets to attempt out the G23.

At The Range Shooting The GLOCK 23

The offset hundred rounds I used on that day were Remington Express pistol ammo loaded with 180 grain jacketed hollow points. The GLOCK performed every bit expected and I had a brawl as I quickly went through the 100 rounds shooting off hand from standing, sitting, lying and moving positions.

There was near no deviation in the felt recoil and accuracy between the GLOCK 23 and the G22. In fact, I was pretty amazed at how like the gun felt to my familiar carry pistol.

Shooting The GLOCK 23

I plainly had a gun that could peradventure replace my beloved G22, but a few more tests were in order. Then, the next trial on the pistol was the Right On Target shooting group outing. There we put another hundred or so rounds through information technology with the aforementioned results in my and others' hands.

Finally, I took the GLOCK 23 dorsum to the Old Fort Gun Lodge for another run. This time I really attempted to wring out the practical accurateness of the gun by carefully aiming and shooting from various distances. I was actually amazed at the results which were easily as good if not better than what I was used to achieving from the GLOCK 22.

My daughter was with me on this twenty-four hour period and we were shooting everything, simply I could have stayed all day to shoot the G23. The gun just shined. I shot information technology at some Shoot N Encounter targets and these are some typical results on five inch targets from 45 anxiety off hand shooting steadily at a speed that just allowed me to realign the sights after each shot.

GLOCK 23 Target

The last ii range sessions mentioned were primarily with 165 grain reloaded copper plated bullets. I fired a couple of the Winchester cocky defense ammo bullets I carry in the gun and put ii shots touching each other from 45 anxiety off hand, with i touching the bulls eye on a 5" target.

So, past the time I got done with this range session the G23 had well over 300 rounds through information technology. It had proven that information technology would make a suitable and slightly more concealable alternative to the GLOCK 22. That'due south something I only didn't call up I would be saying, having confidently shot and carried the G22 for over two years.

So, the G22 is now sold, believe it or not. Difficult to surrender, but the smaller, more than concealable gun is the logical pick for my cocky defence carry needs now.

GLOCK 23 Two Hand Grip

The specs for the GLOCK 23 are as follows: Caliber .forty, System Safe Action, WEIGHT 21.16 oz., LOADED 31.03 oz., LENGTH 6.85 in., HEIGHT five.00 in., Magazine. CAPACITY Standard: 13, OPTIONAL 15 / 17, WIDTH 1.18 in., Barrel Pinnacle 1.26 in., TRIGGER PULL 5.5 lbs., TRIGGER TRAVEL 0.5 in., LINE OF SIGHT 6.02 in., BARREL LENGTH four.02 in. , Barrel RIFLING correct manus, hexagonal, LENGTH OF TWIST ix.84 in.

Lesser line: The GLOCK 23 like all GLOCKS is dependable, accurate, and fun to shoot. It gives a full, just slightly shorter grip, and iv" barrel. Those slightly smaller dimensions make it easier to conceal than the total size G22. And with the equality of accuracy and recoil, if you're looking for a skilful, dependable carry gun that you tin likewise enjoy shooting all day long, the GLOCK 23 is your gun.

UPDATE 9/20/2011: After two years of carry and regular shooting, with several thousand rounds through the gun now, the G23 continues to operate perfectly. In casual wearing apparel, it is the platonic acquit gun for me. A satisfying and fun gun to shoot also.

UPDATE 9/2013: Even so with me, going potent.

UPDATE 7/2014: The GLOCK 23 is one of the few guns that has institute a long term home. It shoots like it did when it was new. Now with me for 5 years, the gun is nonetheless a near daily deport piece.

At present with around 3000 rounds through information technology, e'er undecayed, e'er controllable, always accurate.

UPDATE 2018: While I don't nonetheless have my original G23, I bought another Gen 3 model of the GLOCK 23 .40S&W, to keep as one of my bear guns. It keeps its long time identify in my protection arsenal, along with a couple of S&Due west guns.

Nevertheless a gun I count on and know its unending dependability.
